A massive bluefin tuna caused a stir at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a unprecedented bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million; £2.4m) during the market's first auction of the new year.

The top bid for the 243-kilogram fish was submitted by the parent firm of a popular sushi restaurant group, which operates outlets domestically and abroad.

"An inaugural tuna heralds a prosperous start," commented the business owner, a familiar participant at the annual January sale.

Known as the Tuna Tycoon, this entrepreneur is renowned for submitting substantial bids for premium bluefin tuna at these high-profile new year auctions.

Auction Surprise and Historic Precedent

After the auction, the winner informed journalists that he was "taken aback at the winning bid," adding, "I had thought we would be able to purchase it a little for less, but the price skyrocketed rapidly."

This most recent acquisition tops his previous notable purchases:

  • He bid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
  • He spent 155 million yen the following year.
  • In 2019, he acquired a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1m).

Despite once commenting that he thought he "overdid it," he has now proceeded to break his personal record another time.

An Annual Spectacle of High Prices

The first auction at the Toyosu fish market is typically associated with sky-high prices. The previous year, the initial tuna was purchased for 207 million yen by a separate sushi chain operator, which announced the fish would be served at its locations across Japan.

The intense activity at the fish market during these early morning auctions has evolved into a popular spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.

Swift Service

The multi-million-dollar tuna was promptly prepared for patrons at the bidder's sushi chains shortly after the auction ended.

"I sense like I've begun the year in a positive way after consuming something so auspicious as the year begins," remarked one satisfied customer.
