Former US treasury secretary the Harvard professor is exiting the governing body at the artificial intelligence firm, just days after a collection of digital correspondence between him and deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein became widely known.

Summers stated in a statement that he was "thankful for the chance to have participated, enthusiastic about the prospects of the enterprise, and look forward observing their development".

The prominent academic, who previously presided over Harvard University, declared on Monday that he would be stepping back from public commitments due to his association with the convicted sex offender.

The freshly disclosed communications revealed that the official communicated with Epstein until the 24 hours preceding his 2019 apprehension for alleged sex trafficking of underage individuals.

In another announcement, the artificial intelligence company said it respected Summers' determination to depart.

"We value his many contributions and the insight he brought to the governing body," the company remarked.

Political Context

This development follows after the two houses of the legislative branch agreed on recently to pass a measure that would compel the Department of Justice to release its records on the case.

The measure will then proceed to the office of US President Donald Trump for approval. He has indicated he plans to endorse the legislation, after modifying his position on the subject following pushback from his followers.

A group of Epstein-related messages disclosed by the House Oversight Committee last week referenced multiple prominent individuals in the Epstein's past associates, without implying any criminal activity by those figures.

The messages revealed that Summers and the financier regularly had dinners together, with he often attempting to link Summers to prominent global figures.

After the correspondence were shared with the public, Summers stated he took "complete accountability for my misguided decision to continue interacting with the financier".

He continued that he wanted "to reestablish confidence and mend bonds with the individuals nearest to me".

The economist occupied senior posts under Democratic administrations; serving as Treasury chief under Bill Clinton, and as head of the economic advisory body under President Obama.

He led the institution from 2001 to 2006 and remains a faculty member there. When declaring his departure from public duties recently on this week, he stated he would continue his academic responsibilities.
