Three members of law enforcement perished and no fewer than 15 additional individuals were hurt in an apparently deliberate detonation from gas at a farmhouse in the northern part of Italy.

Event Timeline

The detonation was triggered as officers and emergency crews approached the house close to the Verona region to enforce an removal notice for three siblings who were older adults.

The three officers killed belonged to the Carabinieri military police.

Legal Proceedings

A man and a woman were arrested at the site and a third person who escaped after the explosion was apprehended soon after. All three have been transported to medical facility.

The detonation could be noticed approximately 5 kilometers away and footage from the area showed the property reduced to a pile of rubble.

“This is a time for grieving,” said the Minister of the Interior Minister Piantedosi, who mentioned that previous tries had been made to displace the three family members in the earlier times.

Background and Motive

The head of the Veneto region, President Zaia, stated the residence was facing an removal notice due to unpaid amounts incurred by the siblings.

Mediators had been dispatched to speak to the brothers and sister who had barricaded themselves into the home. When the officers arrived soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities believe one of the siblings caused the detonation.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” provincial police commander Claudio Papagno told the media.

A gas canister had been set off, and the explosion immediately struck our members,” he explained.

Molotov cocktails were also located at the site, the interior minister said.

Casualties and Damage

The wounded by the explosion comprised an additional 11 personnel of the military police as well as three officers of national police and a firefighter.

As stated by the prosecuting attorney, the farmhouse was in a derelict state and had lacked electrical service.

He believed the blast had taken place on a level above the doorway and informed the press it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Moments before the explosion, he mentioned members had “detected a whistling noise, presumably the gas cylinders being turned on”.

Neighbor Statements

“We all knew the situation was dire,” neighbors told reporters, mentioning that the family members had earlier warned to “cause an explosion” rather than vacate the property.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Minister of Defence the Defence Minister stood alongside other government officials in paying tribute to the three officers who had been killed in the service of their country.
