European Cup Fixtures Tonight: Marseille v Newcastle & More

Greetings to a fresh night of thrilling European Cup soccer. 9 fixtures are scheduled for this evening, featuring 3 British teams in action. The Blues face Barcelona in the key fixture of the evening, whilst The Magpies visit the French side and City host Bayer Leverkusen.

League Table

It's the midway stage of the league phase, so the table is starting to take shape. Each of the six English sides are presently in the upper twelve, however there are only two pts between 5th and 16th position, thus there's a hint of uncertainty about the whole thing. Everything is to play for.

Past Meetings

The only previous meeting between Newcastle and Marseille was the Uefa Cup semi-final of 2003-04, won by an emerging star from Ivory Coast. Manchester City and Bayer Leverkusen have never met before. Barcelona and Chelsea have a peedie bit of history.

Initial Game Reports

Just one goal in the first half of the two early games. Samuel Dahl's 6th-minute sizzler has earned Jose Mourinho’s Benfica a 1-0 advantage at Ajax.

Newcastle’s Trip to Marseille

Even though The Magpies arrived in the French south fresh from their confidence-boosting two-one home Premier League win over City on the weekend, and having defeated Union Saint-Gilloise, the Portuguese side and Bilbao in the European Cup, their only away victory since the start of April came in the Belgian capital at Union SG.

Not that Eddie Howe was overly keen to talk about the mental side of this away form issue. “The European Cup is distinct from Premier League games,” said the manager, whose team are 6th in the European table, with nine points from a available twelve and direct qualification to the knockout phase nearly secured. “I am not sure if you can draw parallels between them.”

A dedicated live feed is available for Barcelona vs Chelsea. Murray, the minute-by-minute version of Diego Maradona is on duty for that.
